Garage Door Cable and Roller Replacement and Repair

Garage Door Cable Repair

Lift cables run from the bottom brackets up to the drums on the torsion shaft, and they fail predictably: fraying near the bottom bracket where moisture collects, unwinding off the drum when the door hits an obstruction, or snapping outright.

A door with one failed cable hangs crooked and jams in the track, and the load transfers entirely to the other side. We replace cables in matched pairs, inspect and replace corroded bottom brackets, and check the drums for the grooving that shreds new cables early.

Garage Door Roller Repair

Rollers are the cheapest part of a garage door and the one that makes the biggest difference to how it sounds and feels. Steel rollers with exposed bearings seize, flat-spot, and eventually jump the track; the noise people assume is a failing opener is usually just worn rollers.

Garage Door Roller Replacement

We replace worn rollers with sealed nylon rollers, which run substantially quieter and last far longer than the builder-grade steel rollers most doors ship with. While the door is apart we check and align the tracks, tighten the hinges, and correct the spacing so the new rollers don’t wear on one side.

Garage Door Cable Replacement

Cable replacement is spring-tension work. The door has to be secured, the tension released under control, the drums freed, the new cables seated correctly in the drum grooves, and the tension re-applied evenly on both sides — otherwise the door comes back crooked and the new cables fail as fast as the old ones.

We replace cables in matched sets sized to your door height, re-seat and set the drums, re-wind and balance, and check the bottom brackets and the track for the damage that caused the failure.

Signs of a Failing Cable or Roller

The door hangs crooked or one side lags on the way up

Visible fraying, kinking, or broken strands on a cable

A cable hanging loose or unwound off its drum

Grinding, squealing, or rumbling as the door travels

The door jumps, catches, or binds at the same point every time

Gaps between the roller stems and the track

How We Work

  1. Call the same day. A door with a failed cable can be unsafe to operate and shouldn’t be used.
  2. Secure and release tension. The door is clamped and the spring tension released under control before anything comes apart.
  3. Replace cables and rollers. Matched cable sets, sealed nylon rollers, and any brackets or hinges that have failed.
  4. Level, balance, and test. Cables wound evenly on both drums, door balanced, auto-reverse tested.

FAQ

Do nylon rollers really make the door quieter?

Noticeably. Sealed nylon rollers remove most of the metal-on-metal noise in the track and last far longer than open-bearing steel rollers.

Is a frayed cable safe to leave until the weekend?

No. A frayed cable is a cable that’s already partly failed, and when it goes the door can drop or jam hard. Stop using the door and call us.

Should rollers be replaced at the same time as cables?

It makes sense to. The tension is already released and the door is already apart, so the additional labour is minimal, and worn rollers are often what caused the binding in the first place.

Why did my garage door cable come off the drum?

Usually because the door hit something on the way down, or the tracks are out of alignment and the door binds. Slack cable then jumps the drum groove. We fix the cause as well as the cable.
